Summary of Mount St. Helens Volcanic Activity, August 1997
The following information is provided by the U.S. Geological
Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory and by the
University of Washington's Geophysics Program.
The U.S. Geological Survey and University of Washington monitor
earthquakes and other activity at Mount St. Helens as part of the
USGS Volcano Hazards Program.
August was the most seismically active month at Mount St. Helens since
November 1995, with 38 well-located (quality BB or better) events
occurring directly beneath the cone during the month.
The largest was a magnitude 1.8; however, 31 of the 38 had magnitudes
less than 0.0.
