Description

The STSC Process Definition staff provides on-site consulting services on a cost-recovery basis. These services include an on-site workshop and consulting. The workshop covers the following:
• Understanding what a process is
• Understanding the need for defined processes
• Various process definition representations
   - Graphical
   - Textual
• The process definition process

The workshop is conducted as a series of short lectures with each lecture followed by a hands-on exercise. At the conclusion, the participants will have developed a top-level five to nine block description of their assigned organizational process. Emphasis is placed on defining processes in a manner so that the process definition will be used by the organization and not become shelf ware.

Consulting services include:
• Assisting workshop participants to complete detailed descriptions of their processes
• Helping organizations measure the effectiveness of their processes
• Recommending ways of improving an organization's processes

"Not having a system [documented process] is like doing every job the first time, every time -- including the accompanying errors and false starts. If we have no system [documented process], we have no opportunities for progress and productivity improvements."
-- Kenneth T. Delavigne and J. Daniel Robertson, Deming's Profound Changes, p. 187

Prerequisites
None, although a programming background is helpful.
