Description

The CMM Based Appraisal (CBA) For Internal Process Improvement (IPI) is a licensed method of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) for assessing an organizations capability for developing and maintaining software. It is intended to give the improving organization an overview of where it is with regards to their improvement efforts, and where to focus resources in order to improve their capability.

The CMM Based Appraisal focuses on a thorough examination of the software organization. The results of the assessment are formulated to give the organization an idea of what they need to do to improve. No attribution is given to any project or individual; the results are intended for the organizations capability to produce and maintain software. The CBA / IPI is an excellent activity to baseline the organizations current software capability.

At the Conclusion...
The organization should:
Understand their current Software Capability as defined by the CMM
Understand what activities are required to achieve the next maturity level
Understand some of the extraneous areas that will either hinder or help the improvement effort

Associated Activities and Deliverables
At the conclusion of the assessment, an out brief will be given to the organization outlining the findings and recommendations generated from the assessment.
Approximately 2 weeks later, a final report detailing the information gathered during the assessment will be presented to the organization.
