The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is alerting consumers to the potential risk of minor burns and fire when using simmering potpourri units. During the past year the Commission has received reports of approximately 130 incidents of flare-up of potpourri units. Usually the small candle, used to simmer the potpourri, has ignited accumulated soot, wax or candle debris. This caused flames to flare-up around the sides of the simmering potpourri unit. Also, the use of small candies contained in metal cups with the potpourri units can generate excess heat causing the unit to flare-up or ignite. |
Potpourri units come in various designs. Two common characterstics are: (1) a base, in which a small warmer candle is placed and lit and, (2) a bowl or ladle, supported by the base, in which water and potpourri are placed and simmered to give off a pleasant scent. Simmering potpourri units are sold nationwide. Holidays appear to generate the majority of sales. Consumers should be very cautious when using the simmering potpourri units and adhere to the following guidelines and instructions which apply to all designs. |

Never leave a burning potpourri unit (or any burning candle) unattended.
If the unit should flare-up, smother the flames with a wet cloth.
Do not throw water on the flame.
