Sentry Settles Charges of Unlicensed Exports

The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced that The Sentry Company (Sentry), of Foxborough, Massachusetts, has agreed to pay a $25,000 civil penalty to settle charges that it violated the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) when it exported controlled items without the required licenses.

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) charged that, between May 1999 and June 2002, Sentry exported heat treating containers on four occasions without the required Department of Commerce licenses to Bharat Dynamics Ltd., (Bharat Dynamics) in Hyderabad, India.

At the time of the export, Bharat Dynamics was on BIS’s Entity List and exports to Bharat Dynamics therefore required prior authorization. The Entity List is a compilation of end-users who have been determined to present an unacceptable risk of diversion to developing weapons of mass destruction or missiles used to deliver these weapons. Exports to end-users appearing on the Entity List require licenses. BIS maintains the Entity List to inform the public of the export license requirements related to these entities. Sentry cooperated with the investigation after the violations were uncovered.
