Care for furry friends available on base
Story by Cpl. Kristin S. Jochums
Servicemembers and their families, retirees and active duty reservists with pets don't have to go into Jacksonville to have their furry friends taken care of.
The Camp Lejeune Veterinary Treatment Facility, tucked away on Tarawa Terrace I, is a little-known asset. Nestled between the fitness center and the post office, the facility provides care for acute illnesses and preventative medicine.
"Most people think all we do is vaccinate, which we do, but we also offer sick call," said Army Capt. Julie M. Schneider. Read more
Simulated battlefield training available to Marines
Story by Cpl. Ruben D. Maestre
From the fire team level to the Marine Expeditionary Force level, units here have the option to utilize live and virtual combat training courtesy of high-tech assistance provided by II MEF exercises and simulations division.
"We provide commanders a real simulation battlefield to help them accomplish their training objective and goals," said Truman C. Preston, a native of Pasadena, Texas, and the deputy director for the section. "We can provide virtual, live and constructive training tools down to the fire team level in a simulated battlefield."

Navy Marine Corps Intranet
The long wait is nearly over and soon Camp Lejeune and surrounding bases will begin their transition to the Navy Marine Corps Intranet. To help facilitate the transition, we begin a four-part series of articles to explain the program and the process of implementing it here.
The Department of the Navy developed the concept for NMCI to procure an affordable upgrade to the Navy and Marine Corps' Information Technology infrastructure incorporating enhanced technology, increasing information assurance and ensuring connectivity between Navy and Marine Corps shore installations across the U.S. and several overseas locations. The NMCI will replace the current stove-piped infrastructure with a single, overarching network for voice, video and data information exchange. When completed, the NMCI will be the world's largest intranet connecting more than 360,000 sailors, Marines and DoN civilian employees. "It's going to be better than the current system, " said Cliff Engle, a lead site transition manager for NMCI here. "It will be a much more secure system protecting the Navy and Marine Corps network from intrusion."
Plano, Texas-based Electronic Data Systems Corporation leads the team of companies charged with developing, deploying and maintaining the NMCI. The EDS NMCI team includes industry leaders Raytheon, MCI, WAM!NET, Microsoft, Cisco, Dell, Dolch, Dataline, General Dynamics and a wide range of small businesses. Unlike other Department of Defense (DOD) contracts that procure a product eventually operated and maintained by military and government civilian personnel, the EDS team will remain in place to maintain and operate the system in concert with the government.
