Background Yo'av Karny is an independent journalist and author who has covered civil wars and ethnic conflicts in Central America during the 1980s, Southern Africa in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Turkey and the Kurdish areas of Iraq in 1991, and the Caucasus since 1991. A veteran of Israeli journalism, Karny is a Washington-based foreign affairs writer for Globes, a daily business newspaper in Tel Aviv. Before joining Globes in 1993, he was chief foreign correspondent for Ha'aretz, based in Washington and New York, 19851992. His other positions include U.S. correspondent and political analyst with Yedi'ot Ahronot, a Tel Aviv daily (1980-85), London correspondent for Ma'ariv (197980), and foreign news editor for Israel's army radio (197579). His book Highlanders: A Journey to the Caucasus in Quest of Memory was published in 2000. In addition to his extensive reportage, Karny has published op-ed pieces and essays, mostly on the Chechen crisis and the Caucasus, in the Washington Post, New York Times, International Herald Tribute, and New Republic. Karny's commentary and analysis has also been featured in numerous radio and television interviews including appearances on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer and the Diane Rehm Show.
