Completes the Seminar on Inspector General Operations
Tbilisi - On September 24, the U.S. Defense
Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS), with the support
of the U.S. Embassy's Office for Defense Cooperation, completed
a weeklong seminar on the topic of the Inspector General (IG) function
in a democracy. Colonel Joseph O'Connell, Colonel Forrest Newton,
Colonel Howard McGillin and Colonel David Shakes - the instructors
of the seminar - handed out certificates of completion to the Georgian
participants. Following the ceremony, Colonel Newton spoke about
the significance of the Inspector General as relevant in light of
the Georgian leadership's commitment to identify and root out government
corruption. The seminar brought together Georgian lawyers, officials,
and representatives from the Ministry of Justice, State Special
Security Service, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of State
Security, Office of the Public Prosecutor, Ministry of Defense and
nongovernmental organizations.
The goal of the seminar was to give the participants a solid understanding
of the IG concept, discuss corruption challenges in Georgia's public
sector, and as identify needed areas of IG development and involvement.
