A
message from Regional Commissioner Manuel J. Vaz:
Welcome to the Social Security Administration's Boston Region. Our Region consists of the six New England states, Connecticut, Maine,
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and we have 73
field offices, 1 teleservice center, and 7 Disability Determination Services
offices to serve those members of the public who seek our help. Social Security impacts nearly everyone’s life. Whether assigning a Social Security number to a newborn infant, providing a Social Security benefit to a retired or disabled worker, or payments to the survivors of deceased family members, Social Security touches the lives of more Americans than any other federal program. On a yearly basis, the Boston Region processes over 300,000
new claims for benefits and issues 524,000 Social Security cards. Monthly,
more than 2.4 million New Englanders receive over $2.0 billion in Social
Security retirement, survivor, or disability benefits. In addition, 298,000
recipients of Supplemental Security Income receive $120 million in benefits
each month. Overall, in excess of $25.4 billion in benefits is sent from
Social Security to the citizens of New England yearly and over 19% of
the population relies on Social Security to provide some of their financial
security. |
