This department is comprised of four divisions and a ship
demonstration office: Physical
Sciences Science & Technology; Materials
Science & Technology; Mechanics
and Energy Conversion Science & Technology; Ship
Hull, Mechanical, Electrical Systems Science & Technology;
and Navy
Science & Technology Ship Office. The four divisions
contribute to naval strengths in the areas of: chemistry;
physics; structural & functional materials; structural,
solid, & fluid mechanics; propulsion; energetics; and
hull, mechanical, & electrical systems. Ideas and techniques
developed in these areas are applied to surface ship, submarine,
and undersea payload systems to improve naval warfighting
effectiveness and to provide opportunities for environmental
amelioration in all aspects of Fleet operations. The Navy
Science and Technology Ship Office provides a focal point
for system level technology demonstration to induce revolutions
in design, construction and operation of Naval ships through
early technology transfer to the acquisition or commercial
communities.
