Science and Technology Division

USS Higgins - Ship The division focuses on basic and applied research and technology development for five ONR corporate thrusts: Reduced Signatures, Hydromechanics, Hull Life Assurance, Advanced Electrical USS Maine - Submarine Power Systems, and Distributed Intelligence for Automated Survivability. A number of research topics contribute to these thrusts, including structural mechanics (which includes solid mechanics, thermomechanics, and the mechanics of composites), structural acoustics, structural dynamics, computational mechanics, control of dynamic systems, dynamics of electric power networks and their control, and control of acoustic and non-acoustic signatures. In addition, the division supports applied research for ships and submarine technology in the following areas: structural systems, automation via distributed intelligence, signature control, and maneuvering and seakeeping.
