Mission

The Medical and Biological Science and Technology Division's mission is to conduct research and technology programs directed at maintaining the survival, health and performance of Navy and Marine Corps personnel during training, routine operations, special operations, and in time of war.

Goals

  • Increasing the survival of casualties through immediate, life-saving treatment and stabilization
  • Preventing personnel injury caused by the stresses of demanding naval occupations and environments
  • Ensuring the fitness and physical readiness of Navy and Marine Corps personnel

Areas of Interest

The Division's program is organized into three groups: Casualty Care & Management, Casualty Prevention, and Healthy & Fit Force. Each group supports a focused initiative, the Warfighter Protection Future Naval Capability that will deliver specific technology products in the FY02-FY07 timeframe, and also supports a basic science and applied technology groundwork for far-future products supporting Navy and Marine Corps forces.

Basic research of interest includes varied biomedical disciplines including immunology, shock physiology, environmental physiology, environmental neurotoxicology, molecular cell biology, psychology, and other biomedical sciences. Applied technology and advanced technology efforts focus on developing and demonstrating medical therapies and protective equipment that support and extend the lives and capabilities of Navy and Marine Corps personnel. A few examples are medical devices for controlling hemorrhage, oxygen-carrying substances and improved fluids for casualty resuscitation, laser protection systems, hearing conservation and restoration therapies, and ergogenic agents to enhance cognitive and physical endurance.
