The sleepy town of Port Chicago, surrounded by rolling hills dotted with oaks, hugged the shores of the Suisun Bay east of San Francisco. It was an unlikely place to test the nation’s mettle. Yet that is exactly what happened on July 17, 1944, when a munitions explosion at the town’s naval facility instantly took the lives of 320 people–most of them African American enlistees.
