Permits
- Endangered Species and Marine Mammals
The
Endangered Species Act,
Marine Mammal Protection Act
and Fur Seal Act all
prohibit "take."
However, the acts permit certain activities, that would
otherwise be prohibited, to be conducted with a permit or
authorization issued from NOAA Fisheries. Take is defined
differently under each of the acts.
Different
species under the jurisdiction of NOAA Fisheries have different
permitting and authorization requirements. There may
also be additional permitting requirements from states or
other federal agencies. NOAA Fisheries shares jurisdiction
for species with US Fish and Wildlife. Other federal
agencies and states
also may have permitting requirements.
