On 19 May the Department of the
Army terminated the Combined Arms Service and Staff School (CAS3).
The Department of the Army directed that Army schools and centers
incorporate: TRADOC
Common Core; 5 Terminal Learning Objectives from CAS3; a Combined Arms Exercise
(CAX); and Lessons Learned from OIF/OEF into their Officer Advance Courses and
then change the name to Captains Career Course (CCC).
The schools and centers were given until FY05 to achieve the above for
their resident courses and until 3rd quarter, FY06 to make the
changes in their Non Resident Courses.
Until the schools and centers execute their NR CCC, a reserve officer who has
graduated from a non-resident OAC must complete CAS3 in order to complete a CCC.
When the Department of the Army terminated CAS3, the Chief Army Reserve
(CAR) and Director, National Guard Bureau (DNGB) requested that CAS3 be
continued in The Army School System (TASS) through FY05, in order to allow our
officers to complete their CCC.
In mid September 04 the Reserve Component leadership requested a termination of
CAS3 and a transition to a 16 day course called CAX (Combined Arms Exercise)
effective 1QT FY05. The CAX is 16
days long and incorporates the 5 TLOs of CAS3 and a 40 hour Combined Arms
Exercise. Reserve Officers who have
completed a non-resident OAC and who complete the CAX will be CCC qualified.
During FY05 the CAX will be conducted whenever and wherever the two-week
CAS3 Phase IIb was scheduled in ATRRS. If
a soldier needs to complete a CCC a reservation for CAS3 Phase IIb is necessary
as the CAX does not yet appear in ATRRS.
