School for Command Preparation

Our Mission

The School for Command Preparation (SCP) coordinates and conducts battalion and brigade-level Pre-Command training for active and reserve component command selectees and their spouses. Additionally, SCP provides simulation enhanced tactical training for Command and General Staff College (CGSC) students and faculty members.

What's New
  • The Think Like a Commander computer based (CD-ROM) cognitive battle drills for commanders and staffs are now available.

Our four primary courses
Pre-Command Course (PCC)
  • For all LTC and COL level commanders
  • 1 week long
  • POC is the PCC Operations Officer (913.758.3354)
  • All students must register.  Contact the SCP Registrar at (913.758.3370)

Command Team Seminar (CTS)

  • For the Commander's spouse and selected CSM spouses
  • 1 week long (runs concurrent with PCC)
  • POC is the CTS Program Coordinator (913.758.3336)
  • Additional CTS information

Tactical Commander's Development Course 2000 (TCDC) (See note below*
)

  • For all tactical unit commanders
  • 1 week long (follows the PCC / CTS week)
  • POC is at 913.758.3375 or 3358)

Battle Commander's Development Course (BCDC)

  • For Brigade Combat Team maneuver unit commanders
  • 1 week long (follows TCDC week)
  • POC is at 913.758.3382 or 3372

*In January 2000, TCDC and BCDC were completely redesigned and refocused; getting away from what was known as "CAS3 for Colonels," to more experiential based learning. The current course provides commanders repetitive practice in certain critical commander tasks. The direction of the course was changed from "process-centric" to "execution-centric." SCP uses JANUS simulation as a means to put the commander thru multiple iterations of problem-solving tactical vignettes that practice visualizing, describing, and directing the actions of their unit during combat operations. Additionally, the commanders participate in a TEWT to Lawrence, Kansas, for a MOUT and SASO seminar. While in Lawrence, the commanders participate in a media interview and a mock "Bi-Lateral" meeting with a city official.
