At sea aboard USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3) - 23 sets of helmets, rifles, boots, and dog tags represent 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade Marines killed during the Iraqi war. A Memorial Day Service honoring those Marines was held on the flight deck of Kearsarge.

At sea aboard USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3) - 1st Sgt. Fred Turner, native of New Orleans, and first sergeant for AAV Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, bows his head as the 23 names of Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Task Force Tarawa) who lost their lives during Operation Iraqi Freedom, are read during a Memorial Day Ceremony. 15 of those Marines were from 1/2.

More than 1,000 Marines and Sailors turned out to honor their fallen comrades. KEARSARGE has begun its journey home, with an expected homecoming in late June.
