DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) is responsible for managing the major earth sciences activities supported by the Foundation. It administers programs in support of basic research, facilities, and other scientific activities. The Earth Sciences programs are devoted to increasing basic knowledge of the structure and evolution of the earth as well as active mechanisms driving fluxes and causing change. These programs support research of a complex interplay of physical, chemical, geological, and biological processes. The person selected for this position will serve as a program director in the Hydrologic Science Program, which supports activities aimed at understanding of the earth’s hydrologic cycle and the role of water on and near the continental surfaces of the earth. This program covers a wide range of areas relating to water in the form of precipitation, lakes, streams, and groundwater, and their interactions with landforms, the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the Earth’s crust. This position requires a broad scientific knowledge of these areas plus knowledge of geophysics and geological processes. The duties and responsibilities of the program director include program management. This entails managing and monitoring grants, cooperative and interagency agreements and contracts under their purview to ensure fulfillment of commitments to and by NSF. Evaluate program content and progress the review and evaluation of reports and publications submitted by awardees. Revise project budgets and project descriptions, give guidance and oversees management of projects to the extent appropriate. The person selected for this position will also serve as primary consultant within NSF on matters in the subfield of Hydrologic Sciences. Responsibilities include formulation of long range plans and necessary guidance to further a cohesive integrated approach to advance research objectives both nationally and internationally. Provides authoritative and expert advice, interacts with other scientific experts and speaks for the Division Director in coordinating the effort. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in hydrology or closely related field, plus six or more years of research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. Research, analytical and technical writing skills, which evidence the ability to perform extensive inquiry into a wide variety of significant issues and to make recommendations and decisions based on findings. 3. Ability to organize, implement and manage a research program which allocates resources to meet a broad spectrum of program goals. 4. Knowledge of supervisory, managerial and organizational concepts, principles, and techniques in order to plan, manage and supervise the work of others. 5. Ability to interact with the scientific community and peers to advocate program policies and plans.
