October 1: William C. Meredith Wood Treatment Site Meeting in Georgia

October 1: On Oct. 12, ATSDR will hold a community meeting from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to discuss findings from air testing and the need for additional testing near the William C. Meredith Wood Treatment facility in East Point, Ga. The meeting will be held at the East Point Auditorium, 2727 Main St. (behind City Hall) in East Point, Ga.

October 1: Amoco Oil Co., Site Health Consultation in Missouri

October 1: The final version of a public health consultation on the Amoco Oil Co., site in Sugar Creek, Mo., has been issued by ATSDR. ATSDR concluded that exposure to on-site surface water and sediment is not expected to cause harmful health effects for workers or trespassers. ATSDR also concluded that intermittent exposures to off-site surface water and sediment are not a public health threat to residents living in Sugar Creek.

September 22: Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex, Williamsburg, Va., Public Health Assessment

September 22: The final version of the public health assessment on the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex, in Williamsburg, Va., says exposure to on-base contaminants by on-base residents and visitors and neighboring community residents are not at levels that could cause adverse health effects.

September 21: Empire Sanitary Landfill (aka Alliance Landfill), Taylor Borough, Pa.

September 21: The final version of the public health consultation on the Empire Sanitary Landfill (aka Alliance Landfill), Taylor Borough, Pa., categorizes the site as an indeterminate public health hazard.

September 21: LCP Chemicals Georgia Site Community Meeting in Georgia

September 21: On Sept. 28, ATSDR will hold community meetings from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to discuss its upcoming public health assessment for the LCP Chemicals Georgia site in Brunswick, Ga. The meetings will be held at Arco United Methodist Church, 12 Ross Road in Brunswick, Ga.

September 14: Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site Health Assessment in Colorado

September 14: The public comment version of the public health assessment on the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site in Golden, Colo., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency finds that past and current exposures to site-related contaminants do not pose a health hazard.

September 10: Oak Ridge Site Public Meeting in Tennessee

September 10: The Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee will hold a public meeting at the Oak Ridge Mall in Oak Ridge, Tenn., from 12:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. Members of the community are encouraged to attend; there will be public comment opportunities.

September 9: Molycorp, Inc. Site Meeting in New Mexico

September 9: On Sept. 22, ATSDR will hold a community meeting from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a public availability session will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. to discuss the public comment version of its public health assessment for the Molycorp, Inc. site in Questa, N.M. The meeting will be held at St. Anthony’s Parish, 10 Church Street in Questa.

September 9: Elizabeth Copper Mine Public Health Assessment in Vermont

September 9: The final version of a public health assessment on the Elizabeth Copper Mine site in Strafford, Vt., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency concludes that current and future levels of exposure at the site pose no harmful health effects and that past exposures in one private well posed a public health hazard.

September 2: Fernald Environmental Management Project in Ohio

September 2: A public health assessment on the Fernald Environmental Management Project, also known as the Feed Materials Production Center, in Hamilton, Ohio, has been issued by ATSDR. The agency finds no known current exposure pathways that could pose a public health hazard to neighboring residents under current site conditions.

September 1: Bear Creek Chemical Area Site Meeting in Pennsylvania

September 1: On Sept. 7, ATSDR will hold a public availability session from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. and a public meeting from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. to discuss the findings from the public health assessment on the Bear Creek Chemical Area site in Butler and Armstrong Counties, Pa. The meetings will be held at the Petrolia Volunteer Fire Hall, 200 Argyle Street in Petrolia.

August 27: Atlantic Station Redevelopment Project Health Consultation in Georgia

August 27: A public health consultation on the Atlantic Station Redevelopment Project in Atlanta, Ga., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency finds exposures to contaminants at the site are not at levels likely to cause adverse health effects.

August 27: Griggs and Walnut Groundwater Site in New Mexico

August 27: A public health assessment on the Griggs and Walnut Groundwater site in Las Cruces, NM, has been issued by ATSDR for public review. ATSDR finds that past and present exposures to contaminants at the site are not at levels likely to cause adverse health effects.

August 26: Sunoco Refinery Site in Ohio

August 26: The public comment version of a health consultation for the Sunoco Refinery site in Oregon, Ohio, has been issued by ATSDR. The document will be available for review at the Oregon Branch Library and the East Toledo Family Center through Oct. 5.

August 23: Defense Electronic Supply Center/Gentile Air Force Station Site Health Assessment in Ohio

August 23: The final version of a public health assessment on the Defense Electronic Supply Center/Gentile Air Force Station site in Kettering, Ohio, has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency categorizes the site as “no public health hazard.”

August 16: Bear Creek Site Health Assessment in Pennsylvania

August 16: The public health assessment on the Bear Creek Site in Butler and Armstrong Counties, Pa., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as “no apparent public health hazard.” However, on the basis of insufficient data, the agency categorizes the drinking water at the Bear Creek site as an “indeterminate health hazard.”

August 13: Open House for Naval Construction Battalion Site in Mississippi

August 13: ATSDR representatives will be available to talk with El Dorado Hills, Calif., community members one-on-one about the Oak Ridge High School site on Aug. 17, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Cameron Park Library. ATSDR representatives will also attend EPA community meetings at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19 at the Folsom Community Center.

August 12: Oak Ridge High School Site Meeting in California

August 12: An open house will be held Aug. 19, 2004 about the public health assessment for the Naval Construction Battalion Site in Gulfport, Miss. The agency categorizes the site as “no public health hazard” and the public comment period for the public health assessment is Aug. 12 – Sept. 13, 2004.

August 11: Kelly Air Force Base Site Health Assessment and Consultations in Texas

August 11: The final version of two health consultations and one public health assessment on Kelly Air Force Base site in San Antonio, Texas, have been issued by ATSDR. In two reports, the agency concluded that chemical exposures from Kelly Air Force Base are not expected to have made people sick. The third report finds that people are not expected to have become ill in the past from drinking on-base water.

August 6: Curtis Bay Coast Guard Yard Site Health Assessment in Maryland

August 6: A public health assessment on the Curtis Bay Coast Guard Yard site, Baltimore, Md., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment. The agency finds that contaminants from the site are not expected to cause adverse health effects.

August 3: Lawrence Livermore National Lab Site Health Assessment in California

August 3: On Aug. 11, ATSDR will hold a community meeting from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. to discuss findings of its public health assessment for the Lawrence Livermore National Lab Site in Livermore, Calif. The meeting will be held in the Chianti Room behind Fire Station No. 6, 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, Calif

August 3: Warren Site Hydrogen Sulfide Study in Ohio

August 3: ATSDR completes its hydrogen sulfide study field activities at the Warren Recycling landfill in Warren, Ohio. The ATSDR study investigated the impact of exposure to hydrogen sulfide on the respiratory health of people who live, work or go to school near the landfill. 108 community members assisted ATSDR researchers during the first phase of the study.

August 2: Dupont DeLisle Plant Site Health Consultation in Mississippi

August 2: ATSDR has issued the final version of its public health consultation on the Dupont DeLisle Plant Site, in Pass Christian, Miss. The agency categorizes the site as “no public health hazard.”

July 29: Conrail Rail Yard Site Health Assessment in Indiana - Meeting

July 29: On Aug. 3, ATSDR will hold a public availability session from 4:40 - 6:30 p.m. and a public meeting from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. to discuss the public comment version of its public health assessment for the Conrail Rail Yard Superfund Site in Elkhart, Ind. The meetings will be held at Jimtown North Elementary School (formerly Harley Holbin Elementary School), 30046 C.R. 16 in Elkhart.

July 26: Navy Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex site in Virginia

July 26: A public health assessment on the Navy Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex site, in Williamsburg, Va., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment. The agency finds exposure to contaminants is not at levels that could cause adverse health effects.

July 19: Marine Corps Combat Development Command Site Health Assessment in Virginia

July 19: ATSDR has issued the final version of its public health assessment on the Marine Corps Combat Development Command site in Quantico, Va. (MCCDC Quantico). The agency categorizes the site as “no apparent public health hazard.”

July 16: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Health Assessment in California

July 16: The final version of a public health assessment on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Main Site in Livermore, Calif., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as “no apparent public health hazard.”

July 15: Community Meeting July 20 Regarding Sun Oil Co. site in Oregon, Ohio

July 15: ATSDR will hold a community meeting July 20 concerning the completed air monitoring and the upcoming release of a public health consultation on the Sun Oil Co. site in Oregon, Ohio. The meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the East Toledo Family Center, 1020 Varland Ave., Toledo, Ohio.

July 8: River Terrace Community Site, Washington, D.C.

July 8: Two information sessions on the River Terrace Community Site in Washington, D.C., will be held by ATSDR on July 13. A public health assessment of the site is available for public review and comment through August 4, 2004.

July 7: Amoco Oil Co. Health Consultation in Missouri

July 7: The final version of the public health consultation on the Amoco Oil Co. Site Air-Quality Review in Sugar Creek, Mo., has been issued by ATSDR. In the public health consultation, ATSDR categorized the eight Amoco-owned homes in the Norledge area for which air quality sampling had been done in 2000 as “no apparent health hazard.”

July 1: Conrail Rail Yard Site Health Assessment in Indiana

July 1: A public health assessment on the Conrail Rail Yard Superfund Site in Elkhart, Ind., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency categorizes the site as "no public health hazard."

July 1: LEHR/Old Campus Landfill Site Health Assessment in California

July 1: The final version of the public health assessment on the Laboratory for Energy-Related Health Research (LEHR)/Old Campus Landfill Site on the University of California, Davis, campus near Davis, California, has been issued by ATSDR.

June 23: Warren Site Hydrogen Sulfide Study in Ohio

June 23: Study participants began reaching their half-way points on June 24 in the Warren Recycling landfill hydrogen sulfide study. The month-long ATSDR study is investigating the impact of exposure to hydrogen sulfide on the respiratory health of people who live, work or go to school near the Warren Recycling landfill in Warren, Ohio.

June 23: American Creosote Works Site Public Availability Session in Mississippi

June 23: ATSDR will hold a public availability session June 29 to gather community members’ health concerns relating to the American Creosote Works site in Louisville, Miss. The public availability session allows community members to meet one-on-one with ATSDR representatives.

June 22: Elizabeth Mine Site Health Assessment in Vermont

June 22: A public health assessment on the Elizabeth Mine site in Strafford, Vt., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency categorizes current and future exposures at the site as no apparent public health hazard.

June 16: Omaha Lead Refinery Site Health Assessment in Nebraska

June 16: A public availability session will be held in Omaha, Neb., to discuss the public health assessment (PHA) on the Omaha Lead Refinery site in Omaha, Neb. ATSDR recently issued the PHA for public review and comment. The agency finds the exposure to lead by children under 6 who live in or near the site puts them at risk of lead-related health effects

June 10: Amoco-Sugar Creek Health Assessment in Missouri

June 10: The final public health assessment on the Amoco-Sugar Creek, Mo., site has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes indoor air in the Norledge area as presenting no apparent public health hazard.

June 10: Pennzoil-Quaker State Refinery Site Health Consultation in Louisiana

June 10: The final version of the public health consultation on the Pennzoil-Quaker State Refinery site in Shreveport, La., has been issued by ATSDR. In the health consultation, ATSDR categorizes the levels of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide in the air as no apparent public health hazard. ATSDR also finds that volatile organic compounds in the air present an indeterminate public health hazard.

June 8: Rayonier, Inc., Site Health Assessment in Washington

June 8: The final version of a public health assessment on the Rayonier, Inc., pulp-and-paper mill site in Port Angeles, Wash., has been issued by ATSDR. On the basis of insufficient data, the agency categorizes the site as “an indeterminate public health hazard.”

June 7: Gentile Air Force Station Health Assessment in Ohio

June 7: ATSDR will hold a public availability session about the public comment version of the Gentile Air Force Station public health assessment from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on June 14, 2004, at the Dwight L. Barnes building, 3750 Far Hills Ave., Kettering, Ohio. The public comment period for the health assessment continues through June 28, 2004.

June 7: Omaha Lead Site Health Assessment in Nebraska

June 7: The final version of the public health assessment on the Omaha Lead site in Omaha, Neb., has been issued by ATSDR. In the public health assessment, ATSDR notes the risk of lead-related health effects to children 6 and younger living in or near the Omaha Lead site.

June 4: Warren Site Hydrogen Sulfide Study in Ohio

June 4: ATSDR will host a public meeting and availability session at the Johnson Community Center on Wednesday, June 9 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to inform community members about a state-requested health study ATSDR will conduct in the area around the Warren Recycling facility and to recruit 100 or more volunteers to participate in the study.

June 2: Oak Ridge Site Public Meetings in Tennessee

June 2: ATSDR will host a public meeting on Monday, June 7 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. and a meeting of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES) on Tuesday, June 8 from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Both meetings will take place at the DOE Information Center and representatives from EPA headquarters and Region IV will attend both meetings.

June 2: Myrtle Grove Trailer Park Health Consultation in Louisiana

June 2: A final public health consultation with groundwater sampling results from the Myrtle Grove Trailer Park in Plaquemine, La., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard.

June 1: Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant Health Assessment in Tennessee

June 1: The public health assessment on the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been issued by ATSDR. In the public health assessment, ATSDR notes the site poses no apparent current or future public health hazard.

May 27: St. Juliens Creek Annex health assessment in Virginia

May 27: A public health assessment on the St. Juliens Creek Annex site in Chesapeake, Va., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard.

May 20: Public Meeting on Washington County Air Quality in Ohio

May 20: ATSDR will hold a public meeting May 24, 2004, to update Marietta, Ohio, community members about ATSDR's air modeling and other environmental health activities in Marietta. The meeting will be 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Washington State Community College Graham Auditorium, 710 Colegate Dr., Marietta.

May 19: Gentile Air Force Station Health Assessment in Ohio

May 19: ATSDR released for public review and comment its public health assessment about Gentile Air Force Station (AFS) in Kettering, Ohio. The agency found no apparent past, current or future public health hazard related to Gentile AFS. The public comment date extends through June 28, 2004.

May 19: Ram Leather Care Superfund Site in North Carolina

May 19: On May 25, ATSDR will hold two public meetings in Mint Hill, NC, to hear community health concerns related to the Ram Leather Care Superfund site. The meetings are 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the John M. McEwen Assembly Room, Mint Hill Town Hall, 7151 Mathews-Mint Hill Road, in Mint Hill.

May 18: Public Meeting for Agana Power Plant in Guam

May 18: A public meeting will be held May 25 to discuss findings in the public health assessment for the Agana Power Plant in Mongmong, Guam. The public comment period has been extended until June 1, 2004. ATSDR has determined that samples of chemicals detected at the plant do not pose a public health hazard.

May 14: Pahokee and South Bay Municipal Water Systems Health Consultations in Florida

May 14: ATSDR will hold four public availability meetings in Pahokee and South Bay, FL, to discuss the public health consultation about the Pahokee and South Bay municipal water supply. The meetings in Pahokee are May 18, 2004, from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Loula V. York Branch Library, 525 Bascom Point Road, Pahokee. The South Bay meetings are May 19, 2004, from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Clarence E. Anthony Branch Library, 375 S.W. 2nd Ave., South Bay.

May 14: Hanscom AFB Health Assessment in Massachusetts

May 14: A public health assessment on Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency has determined that past exposure to surface soil is an indeterminate public health hazard because ATSDR scientists lacked sampling data about conditions before site remediation activities. However, ATSDR considers current and future contact with surface soil to pose no public health hazard.

April 23: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Health Study in California

April 23: A health study investigating the incidence of cancer among employees of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., and the Livermore community from 1960 - 1997 has been issued by the California Department of Health Services (CDHS). CDHS prepared the report under a cooperative agreement with the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. According to the study, the incidence of cancer has not been higher than expected, with the exception of melanoma, a rare skin cancer.

April 16: Carpenter-Snow Creek and Barker-Hughesville Mining Sites Health Assessments in Montana

April 16: The final version of the public health assessments on the Carpenter-Snow Creek and Barker-Hughesville Mining District sites in Cascade and Judith Basin counties in Montana has been issued by ATSDR. In the public health assessment, ATSDR notes the possibility of adverse health effects of exposure, particularly in children, to lead in the soil at Neihart.

April 14: Agana Power Plant Health Assessment on Guam

April 14: A public health assessment on the Agana Power Plant site in Mongmong, Guam, has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard.

April 9: Oak Ridge Site Public Meeting in Tennessee

April 9: The Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee will hold a committee meeting at the Kingston Community Center in Kingston, Tenn., from 12:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on April 13. ATSDR will address the initial release of the White Oak Creek public health assessment.

April 7: Pahokee and South Bay Municipal Water Systems Health Consultation in Florida

April 7: A public health consultation on the Pahokee and South Bay Municipal Water Systems site in Palm Beach County, Fla., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment. The public comment period is from April 7 through May 21, 2004.

March 24: Oak Ridge Health Assessment in Tennessee

March 24: The final version of a public health assessment on the uranium releases from the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard.

March 24: Quantico MCB Health Assessment in Virginia

March 24: A public health assessment on the Quantico MCB site in Quantico, Va., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment. The agency determined that contaminants in groundwater, surface soil and surface water and sediment pose no apparent public health hazard.

March 17: Hanscom Air Force Base Health Assessment in Massachusetts

March 17: A public health assessment on the Hanscom AFB site near Lexington, Mass., has been issued by ATSDR for public comment. The agency determined that contaminants in groundwater, surface soil, surface water and sediment pose no apparent public health hazard.

March 16: Foamex Corporation Health Assessment in Pennsylvania

March 16: The final public health assessment on the Foamex Corporation site in Corry, Pa., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency determined that air emissions at the site pose no apparent public health hazard to Corry Area Middle-High School or nearby residents.

March 4: The final public health assessment (PHA) on the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) site in Suffolk, Va., has been issued by ATSDR. In the PHA, ATSDR evaluates past, current and potential future exposures to contaminants found at FNOD. Current use of the site poses no apparent public health hazard.

February 27: Iodine 131 Case Study Available on ATSDR Web Site

February 27: A case study on Iodine 131 (I-131) is now available on the ATSDR internet site http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/HEC/CSEM/iodine/index.html. This case study discusses the ways in which people were exposed to I-131 in the environment, the physical effects, and thyroid tumors of past I-131 exposures.

February 23: Former NAS Alameda Public Health Assessment in California

February 23: A public health assessment (PHA) on the former Naval Air Station Alameda (NAS Alameda) site in Alameda, Calif., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. In the PHA, ATSDR evaluates past, current and potential future exposures to contaminants found at NAS Alameda. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard.

February 4: Reasor Chemical Company Public Health Assessment

February 4: A public health assessment on the Reasor Chemical Company site in Castle Hayne, N.C., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment through March 12.

January 28: The final version of a public health consultation on the Chillum Gasoline/Perchloroethylene site in Hyattsville, Md., has been issued by ATSDR. On the basis of lack of data, the agency categorizes the Chillum site as an indeterminate public health hazard.

January 26: Norfolk Naval Shipyard Public Health Assessment in Virginia

January 26: A public health assessment (PHA) on the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) site in Portsmouth, Va., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. In the PHA, ATSDR evaluates past, current and potential future exposures to contaminants originating from NNSY. The document is available for review at the Portsmouth Main Library.

January 22: Elizabeth Mine Site Public Availability Session in Vermont

January 16: Scituate Groundwater Sites Public Health Consultation in Rhode Island

January 16: A public health consultation on the Scituate Groundwater sites in Scituate and Johnston, R.I., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard and will discuss its findings at a meeting on Jan. 26, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

January 15: Anniston/Choccolocco Creek PCB Site Health Consultation in Alabama

January 15: A public health consultation on the Choccolocco Creek PCB site in Anniston, Ala., has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency concluded that fish and aquatic animals caught in Choccolocco Creek contain PCBs above the FDA-approved level and are not fit for human consumption.

January 15: Dover Air Force Base Health Assessment in Delaware

January 15: The final version of a public health consultation on the Dover Air Force Base site in Kent County near Dover, Del., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as no apparent public health hazard.

January 13: Openings for New Members on the ORRHES in Tennessee

January 13: ATSDR announces openings for members to participate on the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES). The deadline to receive application materials is Feb. 3, 2004.

January 12: Draft MS Prevalence Study in Missouri

January 12: A multiple sclerosis (MS) prevalence study ATSDR conducted in Sugar Creek and Independence, Mo., has found no statistically significant increase in the number of residents with MS in Sugar Creek compared to Independence. ATSDR will conduct follow-up studies to better understand risk factors associated with MS.

January 8: Anniston PCB Site Health Consultation in Alabama

January 8: The final public health consultation on exposure to PCBs via inhalation at the Anniston PCB site in Anniston, Ala., has been issued by ATSDR. On the basis of lack of data, the agency has categorized the Anniston PCB site as an indeterminate public health hazard.

January 5: Iowa Army Ammunition Plant Public Health Consultation

January 5: A public health consultation on the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa, has been issued by ATSDR for public review. The agency finds no adverse health effects from releases of beryllium and depleted uranium.
