Packaged Bait System for Controlling Insects
Technology Description:
ARS researchers have developed a packaged bait system for controlling insects. The bait consists of an insecticidal food bait composition housed in a bait block holder that allows for easy placement in locations, increasing the probability of the target insect encountering the bait. The system makes the bait readily accessible to the target insect. The bait system is especially effective in controlling household cockroaches, other insects such as crickets and grasshoppers. This invention offers a potential alternative to frequent blanket pesticide applications, thus reducing application costs and insecticide contamination risks. In addition, this insect food bait, which is widely attractive to various insect species, does not attract mammals such as cats or dogs. It also has a long shelf life and is easy to handle. The moist, pliable nature of the bait allows it to mold and adhere to the sides of bait containers, thus keeping it secure regardless of how a bait station is oriented. The bait block holder keeps the bait fresh, reduces mishandling, and allows for easy placement.
Professional pest control companies will likely benefit from this technology. Companies that manufacture biocides, insecticides and pesticides could develop this invention for commercial use.
