Biological Treatment for Controlling Wood Deteriorating Fungi

Agency:

Forest Service

Technology Description:

This invention uses environmentally-friendly microbiocide, specifically actinomycete mutant SC-36, in protecting wood and wood products against various fungi. The wood is treated with the microbiocide in the form of either living cells, metabolites, or metabolites with low concentration of cobiocides. Specifically, this treatment prevents discoloration by sap stain, mold fungi and degradation by wood-rotting fungi. This invention is an alternative to treating wood with synthetic chemical preservatives.
