Method and Apparatus for Immunological Diagnosis of Fungal Decay in Wood

Agency:

Forest Service

Technology Description:

This invention is a simple, sensitive and accurate method for detecting brown-rot fungi at an early stage of colonization to prevent strength loss. Wood that has lost 3% of its weight to decay may have lost 50% of its strength, and fungal decay is difficult to diagnose during the early stages. The method utilizes two antibodies that recognize unique protein sequences of fungal enzymes and a polyester support with carrier and capture zones. If fungal enzyme is present in the wood extract sample, it is trapped between the two antibodies and a positive result is indicated by an easily visible colored band at the site of the immobilized antibody. The patented technique may be carried out by an individual without elaborate training or instruction, is very easy to perform in the field and does not require any cumbersome equipment.
