Solid Phase Bioremediation Methods Using Lignin-Degrading Fungi

Agency:

Forest Service

Technology Description:

This invention is a method by which soil contaminated with pentachlorophenol or other halogenated aromatic compounds (HACs) is inoculated with lignin-degrading fungi cultivated on a lignocellulosic substrate. The fungus degrades the HACs to less toxic and non-toxic substances. This bioremediation method was developed specifically for field applications, such as remediation of contaminated soil at wood treatment facilities. Soil or sludge can be treated by mixing it with lignin or cellulosic material which has been preinoculated followed by aeration and hydration. This technology was developed from research originating in the area of fungal decolorization of kraft bleach effluents that demonstrated the capability of lignin-degrading fungi to detoxify the effluents through destruction of low-molecular weight chlorinated organics.
