Treatment of Wood and Other Lignocellulosic Materials with Iodates

Agency:

Forest Service

Technology Description:

This invention is a method of treating wood and other lignocellulosic materials with iodates for protection from attack by decay fungi, including white rot and brown rot fungi. Iodates, used in an aqueous solution, are impregnated into wood or other lignocellulosic material. This invention provides an alternative treatment for preserving wood and wood products, utilizing a waterborne preservative. Iodates are less toxic than those currently used, do not exhibit significant leaching, are relatively inexpensive, and can be utilized with existing wood treating equipment and process.
