Continuous Process for the Production of Lactulose for Lactose Using Boric Acid as a Complexaion Agent

Technology Description:

The invention is an improved method of preparing lactulose, a non-caloric, complex carbohydrate. It is a valued pharmaceutical with applications as a laxative and as a treatment of disorders involving the brain. Lactose is converted to lactulose, followed by joining lactulose to boric acid. The lactulose-borate compound is split in acidic solution, the boric acid is crystallized, and the two components are separated by filtration, concentration, and column chromatography.
