Date Issued:
September 22, 1998

Abstract:
The invention relates to plants that breed true by transferring an apospory-specific apomictic genomic region of Penesetum squamulatum to a cultivated Pennesetum plant to form a true-breeding hybrid. It also relates to markers and probes to the genomic region , vectors containing the markers and probes, and to a method for producing true-breeding plant progeny using the apomictic genomic region. The invention is also directed to cultivated plants that contain the gene(s) from Pennisetum squamulatum, which express apomixis. The apomictic mechanism could greatly simplify the development and commercial production of hybrids. Current hybrids need to be produced in isolation to maintain purity of the hybrid, and have to be remade each generation. The apomictic mechanism would greatly reduce the cost of hybrid production and revolutionize the way hybrids are produced.
