Patent Number: 5866416
Docket Number: 5696
Serial Number: 8593999
Date Patented: 02/02/1999

Agency:

Agricultural Research Service
Issued:
February 2, 1999

Abstract:
The invention relates to production of a safe genetically-engineered vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). Prior application serial number 08/418716 was directed to a genetically engineered virus- vaccine which provides effective protection against FMDV but is not infectious for animals or cells in culture. The noninfectious quality of the virus makes the vaccine both safe to use and difficult to produce. This invention discloses a novel genetically engineered cell line which can be infected by the virus-vaccine, thus making mass production of the virus-vaccine much less expensive.
