Phytotoxin Deficient Mutant Strains of the Biocontrol Agent Trichoderma Virens
See also: US Patent Office Full Record

Patent Number: 5882915
Docket Number: 9596
Serial Number: 8633334
Date Patented: 03/16/1999

Agency:

Agricultural Research Service
Date Issued:
March 16, 1999

Abstract:
The invention uses stable mutated strains of a Trichoderma virus for biological control of fungal diseases in plants. Naturally-occurring strains of Trichoderma virens (T. virens) are mutated to produce strains that are deficient in their ability to produce viridiol, a phytotoxin which is toxic to plants, and remains an effective biological control. Mutated T. virens are cultured and screened so that strains deficient in the ability to produce viridiol are selected and can be used as a spray for plants or seedlings, a seed coating, and a soil treatment. The invention is particularly effective for controlling soilborne root or seedling diseases.
