Date Issued:
December 23, 1997

Abstract:
The invention relates to a system and method for grading cotton. There are four grades or levels of stickiness for cotton. Currently the Minicard test and the Thermodetection test are used for grading cotton but both are slow and expensive and neither is suitable for continuous on-line measurements. Stickiness is a result of sugar. The current invention uses two moisture detectors. The first reference detector measures resistance and/or capacitance of cotton being processed to determine moisture level. The second moisture detector uses infra-red (IR), which is responsive to both sugar and moisture. Analyzing the variation between the reference moisture content and sugar based moisture contents with a desktop computer allows rapid and accurate measurement of sugar levels and thus stickiness of cotton as it is being processed.
