New Method for Immunizing Chicken Embryos

Technology Description:

The invention is a method for immunizing avian embryos in ovo with water-in-oil-in-water (WOW) emulsion vaccines. This method can be used to administer more than a half dozen vaccines for major poultry illnesses, including Newcastle disease and avian influenza--two poultry diseases that cause devastating losses to producers. The technique allows these vaccines to be given by machine. Giving vaccines to young poultry flocks manually have several drawbacks, such as the need to handle young birds, and losses sustained due to infection before adequate immunity has developed. The two component vaccine is more effective than either an oil or a water vaccine alone in that live and/or inactivated vaccines can be included in the water phase without being affected by the oil components of the vaccine. This method has proven to be safe, effective, economical, and convenient.
