Localized Notch reinforcement of Wooden Beams
Agency:
Forest Service Technology Description:
This invention provides localized high tensile reinforcement across the grain of a wooden beam by placing strong tensile strength fibers across a split line near notches in beams. This reinforcement stops crack propagation and increases the strength of the beam at the notch location. The reinforcement may be applied after a notch is cut in the beam or may be applied at a factory. This invention is a further improvement of earlier inventions related to the combination of wood and fiberglass to provide a simple and cost-effective method to reinforce wooden members. This invention may allow the use of lower grade wooden members for structural purposes for which they normally cannot be used and can also be used in repair and rehabilitation of wooden members in historic buildings. Potential applications include rafters and floor/ceiling joists.
