Method for Controlling Sprouting in Stored Potatoes
See also: US Patent Office Full Record

Patent Number: 6107247
Docket Number: 12297
Serial Number: 9257730
Date Patented: 08/22/2000

Technology Description:

The invention relates to suppression of sprouting in stored potatoes using dry rot antagonists. The achievement of both dry rot and sprout control with a single biocontrol agent formulation promises a safer environment to the public and great savings to growers by reducing application time and cost, as well as crop losses. Sprout control is currently required for preservation of more than 50 percent of the potato crop because of the popularity of processed potatoes and their associated requirement for storage above the 3C needed to inhibit sprouting. To prevent severe storage losses, large sums are invested in CIPC, the only synthetic sprout inhibitor registered for U.S. post-harvest application to potatoes. However, due to concerns about its carcinogenicity, the use of CIPC is being more severely regulated.
