Disruption of the Cytochrome C Gene in Xylose-Fermenting Yeast

Agency:

Forest Service

Technology Description:

This invention discloses a xylose fermenting yeast strain that exhibits a reduced expression of cytochrome C, resulting in enhanced fermentation of xylose relative to strains in which cytochrome C is fully functional. By culturing this xylose-fermenting mutant strain in the presence of xylose-containing material, a method of producing ethanol from xylose is established. The use of ethanol as a fuel source has increased dramatically in recent years and future needs are projected to exceed the production capability of currently utilized technology. Consequently, this invention is important because it provides a new, viable, and abundant source from which to ferment ethanol.
