Technology Description:
The invention relates to compounds from cinnamon which have insulin-potentiating activity, thus lowering the amount of insulin required for glucose metabolism. Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), or Type II diabetes, is a major health problem worldwide. It currently affects a approximately 12 to 16 million people in the United States alone, and the incidence is increasing. Insulin resistance plays an important role in Type II diabetes, as well as other disorders such as obesity, glucose intolerance, and hypertension.
