This office was created by act of Congress in 1978 to

  • Detect fraud or instances of waste, abuse or misuse of Commerce funds

  • Identify operational deficiencies within the Department

  • Ensure the underlying problems that permit such failings are rectified

  • Offer recommendations for preventing problems in the future

We are one of 57 statutory OIGs that exist throughout the federal government, each as an independent entity within the agency it oversees.
