White House, Corporation for National and Community Service, and Washington D.C. Officials Announce Grants to Support Volunteers in Homeland Security

Press conference at 11:00 am Thursday, July 18

Governor Tom Ridge, Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams, USA Freedom Corps Director John Bridgeland, and Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Leslie Lenkowsky will announce the recipients of the first federal grants for volunteer service in homeland security at a press conference in Washington, D.C. on Thursday July 18.

The grants are being announced through the AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs, and will support volunteers active in meeting the public safety, public health, emergency response, and disaster preparedness of communities around the country.

The Corporation for National and Community Service engages 2 million Americans in service each year through the AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. The Corporation is a part of President Bush's USA Freedom Corps initiative to involve all Americans in service to their communities.
