President and First Lady Express "Thanks for Giving" and Urge Americans to Serve and Donate More

New PSA and national service website encourage service and philanthropy

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Today the White House unveiled a new public service announcement (PSA) (View the PSA at http://www.whitehouse.gov/) featuring the President and Laura Bush that thanks Americans for their generosity since September 11 and encourages them to find more ways to make a difference in their communities.

The television, print and Internet spots were distributed nationally in time to air over the Thanksgiving holiday. The campaign directs viewers to a huge range of volunteer and giving opportunities at www.nationalservice.org, the revamped website of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

"This year, Thanksgiving will mean more than it ever has. So many American families have given so much since September 11. Your generosity has helped millions, and inspired the entire world," the President says in the ad. He urges Americans to "Share your strengths with those who need it most in your neighborhood, in your own hometown. Thanks for making such a difference."

Since September 11, Americans have given more than $1 billion to disaster relief efforts, but donations to many charities not directly involved in these efforts have declined. The President's broad appeal is aimed to bolster support for a wide range of volunteer and charitable organizations that help America's communities every day.

The PSA campaign was unveiled this morning at a White House briefing by Karen Hughes, Counselor to the President, Leslie Lenkowsky, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and Peggy Conlon, President and CEO of the Ad Council which distributed the TV ad.

"Since September 11, there is a new appreciation in America for things that really matter - helping one another, sacrifice, giving and caring," said Lenkowsky. "We must ensure that this outpouring of generosity helps charities across the board, not just those responding to the terrorist attacks. History suggests that when crisis strikes, Americans rise to the challenge, by donating their money and their time through volunteer service."

The Corporation's revamped website allows people to search for volunteer and national service opportunities in their communities using VolunteerMatch, and facilitates donations to more than 700,000 nonprofits through Network for Good, a new collaboration between AOL Time Warner Foundation and AOL, Inc.; the Cisco Foundation and Cisco Systems, Inc.; and Yahoo! Inc., in partnership with over 20 nonprofit foundations and associations.

The Corporation for National and Community Service engages more than 1.5 million Americans annually in improving communities through three programs: AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America. On November 8, the President called for thousands more AmeriCorps and Senior Corps volunteers to serve in homeland security efforts. For more information, visit www.nationalservice.org.
