Statement by U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans On Revised 1st Quarter GDP

Today's numbers give us added confidence that many sectors of our economy are bouncing back, but we still have work to do to put people back to work and achieve solid, acceptable, sustained growth.

Now it's time for Congress to give added confidence to America's businesses – to let them know that they can take the risk, invest in their businesses and hire new workers because Washington is unified behind an agenda that will turn the short-term growth we saw in the first quarter into strong, sustained long-term growth. That means making the tax cuts that helped moderate the recent economic slowdown permanent, and finishing the job on Trade Promotion Authority and the energy bill.
