U.S. Secretary of Commerce to Lead American Firms
on an Energy Business Development Mission to St. Petersburg and
Moscow, Russia
U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans today announced that he will lead
representatives of 13 small, medium and large U.S. energy and energy-related
firms on a business development mission to St. Petersburg and Moscow,
Russia on Sept. 21-25, 2003.
“I’m
pleased to lead this group of American business leaders to explore
business opportunities in Russia,” said Evans. “Russia
represents an increasingly attractive market for American companies.
The benefits of open trade are universal, and the rewards of an
increased global energy supply and promoting increased U.S.-Russian
trade will benefit both of our countries.”
This trade mission is the result of a 2002 Presidential Summit between
Presidents Bush and Putin, when the two leaders announced a new
Energy Dialogue, the goals of which are to increase the global energy
supply, ensure energy security, and promote U.S.-Russian cooperation
in developing energy resources.
In keeping with these goals, Russia will host this year’s
U.S.-Russia Commercial Energy Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia --
to which Secretary Evans will lead the Department of Commerce’s
Oil & Gas Business Development Mission. During the Summit, Department
officials and business delegation members will not only participate
in official summit activities, but American businesses will additionally
spend time meeting with their Russian counterparts in order to develop
or expand their business in Russia.
Evans’ trip underscores the maturing relationship between
the United States and Russia. The focus of the mission will be assisting
U.S. businesses to expand and explore trade and investment opportunities
in the oil and gas sector including exploration and production,
equipment and services, and transportation. The trip will offer
U.S. businesses a forum in which to explore business partnerships
with Russian business leaders and meet with senior Russian government
officials.
