U.S. COMMERCE SECRETARY DONALD L. EVANS VISITS HARBIN, CHINA
Evans Tells Chinese University Students Free and Fair Trade Creates Jobs

HARBIN, CHINA –U.S. Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans kicked off a four-day swing through China with a visit to the Harbin Institute of Technology where he told students that free and fair trade will spur China’s economic development, raise living standards, and create jobs in China as well as in other countries. Evans’ visit to Harbin also included a tour of Harbin Electric Machinery as well as a visit with orphans at the Harbin Children’s Home.

“I am in China to promote commercial partnerships and policies that can strengthen businesses here and at home, and lead to a higher quality of life for all,” Evans said in a speech to the Harbin Institute of Technology. “This will lead to strengthening our economies and growing jobs for American workers.”

The Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is the top technical university in the Northeast region of China. It is renowned for its advanced research and development programs. It is one of China’s leading business schools and attracts students from around the world.

While in Harbin, Evans also toured the Harbin Electric Machinery Company. The company produces hydro turbines, hydro generators, steam turbine generators and gas turbine generators. The company is a state-owned enterprise that has successfully responded to changes in China’s economic policies. The company uses advance manufacturing technology and equipment from several countries including the United States, Germany and Japan.

Evans also visited with orphans at the Harbin Children’s Home. The Harbin Children’s Home was established in 2001 by the Harbin city government. The home employs 80 staff and is the home for 200 children ranging in age from newborns to 18 years old.
