Former Hellmann Logistics Computer Programmer Sentenced for Unauthorized
Computer Intrusion
Marcos Daniel Jiménez, the United States Attorney for
the Southern District of Florida, and William Sims, Special Agent in Charge,
United States Secret Service, Miami Field Office, announced today the sentencing
on December 4, 2003, of former Hellmann Logistics employee Jesus Diaz to a
twelve month period of imprisonment, six months of which will be served by
home confinement. In addition, the defendant was ordered to pay $80,713.79
in restitution to Hellmann Logistics. Diaz pled guilty to one count of intentionally
accessing without authorization a protected computer and thereby recklessly
causing damage, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1030(a)(5)(A)(ii)
on September 23, 2003.
Diaz, a former AS/400 computer programer at Hellmann Logistics’
IT department, was arrested by the United States Secret Service on July 10,
2003, after having broken into Hellmann’s computer system from a remote
location. During the unauthorized intrusion, Diaz deleted several programs
which resulted in the malfunction of several crucial applications and over
$80,000.00 in damages.
Mr. Jiménez commended the investigative efforts of the
United States Secret Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United
States Attorney Richard D. Boscovich.
