Trade Promotion Authority and Agriculture

“This Administration is strongly committed to expanding trade and tearing down unfair trade barriers that hurt our producers in the international marketplace. If we are going to accomplish these goals, the President needs the tools to get the job done. TPA is critical to that agenda."

Secretary Ann M. Veneman

Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) would put the United States in a strong position to lead the way in completing major new trade agreements that would advance the global interests of U.S. agriculture. The United States is already committed to multilateral and regional negotiations to liberalize trade, such as in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). TPA would clear the way for intense negotiations in these fora and others to begin. It would also allow U.S. negotiators to take advantage of promising new opportunities in the future to initiate negotiations on other bilateral, regional, or multilateral agreements. TPA would maintain the long-standing trade policy partnership between the President and the Congress, while giving the President’s representatives the credibility to negotiate tough deals.
