1. Director's Message
On August 30 and 31, IMLS convened Charting the Landscape/Mapping New Paths: Museums, Libraries, and K-12, a workshop focusing on the K-12 years as a foundation for lifelong learning and on ways in which museums and libraries can form effective collaborations with schools and other community organizations in order to address learners' needs. Workshop invitees included 75 leaders from museums, libraries, school systems, institutions of higher education, government agencies, organizations involved in education reform, and IMLS staff.

As school begins in communities across the nation, I find myself energized by the ideas and vitality that were shared at the workshop. We were inspired by examples of rich collaborative efforts, and we envisioned what would be possible for teachers and students, for families and caregivers were our institutions to meet the challenges of our changing world by leveraging assets and creating new synergies of service. We also talked about the risks. What happens if we embrace a collaborative strategy for the future-and what is at stake if we don't?

The workshop overview, participant bios, opening remarks, and other resources are available at http://www.imls.gov/pubs/chartingthelandscape/index.htm. We look forward to sharing the results of this meeting through updates to our Web site and in an upcoming publication.

2. A Closer Look
Virtual Museum Project Explores Cultures of the Northwest Olympic Peninsula With the expansion of computer technology and digital communication to some of the most remote corners of the earth, there is growing concern that the cultures, languages, and lifestyles of the world's minority populations-especially indigenous peoples-are seriously threatened. Through its grant programs, the Institute of Museum and Library Services promotes awareness, appreciation, and preservation of the diverse cultures found in the states and territories of the United States. One such program is the Community Museum Project, www.communitymuseum.org, of the University of Washington and its tribal, cultural, and educational partners in the Northwest Olympic Peninsula. Funded by an IMLS National Leadership Grant for Museum-Library collaboration, the project is bringing together community members to create an online museum and archives that will increase cultural understanding, expand access to unique public and private cultural collections, and promote communication among the many diverse groups living in the area. For more information, please read this month's highlight.

3. IMLS Director Leads U.S. Delegation to International Meeting of Government Cultural Leaders
On August 23 and 24 in Mexico City, the Western Hemisphere's highest level government authorities responsible for culture reaffirmed the importance of cultural diversity to democratic governance and the need to strengthen the cultural field in order to help combat poverty, reduce social differences, and create jobs. The President of Mexico's National Council for Culture and Arts, Sari Bermúdez, hosted the Second Inter-American Meeting of Ministers of Culture and Highest Appropriate Authorities of the Organization of American States. Dr. Robert Martin, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, led the U.S. delegation. For further information, please read the IMLS press release.

The event is part of ongoing FCC efforts to spur the deployment of broadband services across the United States, including to schools and libraries. 5. Call for Museum Assessment Program (MAP) Grant Applications: December 1 Deadline
MAP grant applications are now available to museums of all types and sizes for the annual December 1 postmark deadline.

Museums choose one of four types of assessments offered by the American Association of Museums: Institutional, Collections Management, Public Dimension, and Governance. IMLS grant funds pay for most assessment costs. Download the application forms at www.aam-us.org/map.

Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible institutions. If you have eligibility questions, contact Jeannette Thomas, Program Specialist, at 202-606-8548 or jkthomas@imls.gov.

Demand is expected to be high this year owing to the recent revision of the Public Dimension Assessment, the continuing success of the new Governance Assessment, and a change in policy allowing museums to repeat an assessment after seven years, so museums are encouraged to apply now.

For more information, visit www.aam-us.org/map, call 202-289-9118, or e-mail map@aam-us.org.

6. Smartest Card Campaign Launches This Month
IMLS is pleased to be a partner in a new campaign to promote the value of public libraries. The Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association, is launching the "Smartest Card" campaign in September 2004, with the goal of making the library card the most valued and used card in every wallet. PLA, which has made a multiyear commitment to the campaign, is focusing first on the library "family"--staff, trustees, friends, and supporters--and is providing tools to help deliver the message. For more information and to download a free campaign tool kit (with materials in English and Spanish), go to www.pla.org/smartestcard.htm.

7. Fourth Annual National Book Festival on the Mall: October 9
IMLS is once again a proud sponsor of the National Book Festival, organized by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. The festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The festival is free and open to the public.

As a charter sponsor, IMLS supports the "Pavilion of the States," the most visited pavilion at past festivals. The Chief Officers of State Library Agencies collaborate with the Library of Congress and the Center for the Book to ensure that representatives from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and American trusts and territories are on hand to discuss and distribute materials about their reading and literacy promotion programs.
