Wood
takes over Joint Experimentation Directorate
Former commander of Army's 2nd Infantry Division
in the Republic of South Korea takes reigns of overseeing
USJFCOM directorate's goals
of exploring, testing and validating warfighting ideas
and concepts that lead to military transformation
By USJFCOM Public Affairs
(SUFFOLK,
VA. -- Oct. 6, 2004) - Army
Maj. Gen. John R. Wood relieved Army
Maj. Gen. James M. Dubik as director for
U.S. Joint Forces Command's Joint
Experimentation Directorate (J9) in a ceremony here
today.
Dubik, who served as director of J9 since 2002, will soon
receive his third star and assume duties as the commanding
general of I Corps and Fort Lewis in Fort Lewis, Wash.
"(J9) is a great place to work," said Dubik
during the ceremony. "We do our jobs here to transform
the most powerful armed force in the world. We have an
incredible work force that operates within the commander's
intent without much direction."
"They
are people simply dedicated to their nation and the advancement
of joint warfighting. I've been very
lucky here, you can't find a better place to excel."
Dubik gave some parting advice to Wood, his long time
friend.
"The
future is unknown, anything we build had better work
under various circumstances in the future. Don't ever
think you're the only one with the right idea and don't
try to be right; try to be not too wrong," said Dubik.
As the J9, Wood will oversee all USJFCOM efforts involving
joint experimentation.
"You are doing important work and have high standards
within the J9 directorate. I look forward to the challenges
and opportunities ahead and I will invest myself in your
success," said Wood. "It is an honor and pleasure
to join you to advance change in joint warfighting."
Experimentation is the military's primary method for exploring,
testing and validating warfighting ideas and concepts to
transform the way U.S. soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen
fight future battles.
J-9 integrates experimentation efforts of all the services
and unified commands. It is America's military transformation
laboratory.
Commissioned following graduation from the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point, N.Y. in 1972, Maj. Gen. Wood has
held numerous assignments during his career, ranging from
platoon leader to commanding general of the 2nd Infantry
Division of the Eighth U.S. Army, Republic of South Korea.
He also served as a National Security Council White House
Fellow from 1984-85.
In addition to a bachelor of science degree from the U.S.
Military Academy, Wood holds advanced degrees from the
University of Chicago and the U.S. Army Command and General
Staff College.
His decorations include awards of the Legion of Merit,
the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal,
the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation and
Achievement Medals. He is also authorized to wear the Parachutist
Badges as well as the Ranger Tab.
