Four pioneers of American cryptology were inducted into the NSA/CSS Hall of Honor today at the National Cryptologic Museum. In his keynote remarks during the induction ceremony, Lt Gen Michael V. Hayden, USAF, Director, National Security Agency/Chief, Central Security Service, highlighted the distinguished achievements of each of the inductees:

• Dorothy T. Blum, a pioneer in writing computer software at NSA, Ms. Blum significantly shaped the architecture of computers systems and automation of processes
• James R. Chiles, a brilliant engineer, he was responsible for innovations in remote keying for Communications Security devices, including high-speed electronic key generators
• Meredith Gardner, a talented, self-taught linguist fluent in German, Japanese and Russian, he proved instrumental in breaking the underlying code and led the efforts to reconstruct the codebooks on the VENONA project
• Brigadier John Tiltman, a UK citizen, he was considered one of the finest cryptanalysts on non-machine systems and was an early and persistent advocate of British cooperation with the United States in cryptology
