NTSB TO MEET ON 2003 STREET MARKET ACCIDENT AND CHILD RESTRAINTS ON AIRLINERS

The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public Board meeting Tuesday, August 3, at 9:30 a.m., in its Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C.

The items on the agenda are:

On July 16, 2003, an 86-year-old man, driving a Buick LeSabre, struck a stopped car, continued through an intersection and drove through a Santa Monica, California farmers' market striking pedestrians and vendors displays. As a result of the accident, there were 10 fatalities and 63 injuries. Neither the driver of the Buick or the stopped car were injured. Media Contact: Keith Holloway, (202) 314-6100.

The Board recommended in 1995 that the FAA require "that all occupants [of airliners] be restrained during takeoff, landing, and turbulent conditions, and that all infants and small children be restrained in a manner appropriate to their size." (Recommendation A-95-51) This item is on the NTSB's Most Wanted List of Safety Improvements. The Board will discuss whether to reclassify the FAA's actions in response to this recommendation (it is currently classified "Open Acceptable Action") and whether to retain the issue on its Most Wanted List. Media Contact: Ted Lopatkiewicz, (202) 314-6100
