ASTER Pricing Policy
At the direction of NASA, the Land Processes (LP) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) EROS Data Center began charging for selected ASTER data products.
Effective August 12th, 2002, a $55 (US) charge will be assessed for each ASTER Level 1A and ASTER L1B granule (image) ordered through the LP DAAC. Additional charges for shipping and handling may also apply. Please see the tables below for details.

1Note: All prices are subject to change.
2Shipping and Handling: Both media and FTP orders are assessed a $5 handling fee. A shipping carrier and account number are required for products being shipped outside the United States (see International Orders below).
3Domestic Orders: Orders shipped domestically will be sent from the USGS EROS Data Center via the most economical means possible (at no cost to the user). All orders exceeding $200 will be shipped using a carrier capable of parcel tracking to insure proper delivery. Note that these carriers typically do not deliver to Post Office Boxes, therefore, it is important that your order contains a valid street address.

5International Orders: All international orders must be prepaid. When making payment arrangements with LP DAAC User Services, please designate one of the following carriers for order delivery: FedEx, DHL, or UPS. Please note that these carriers do not ship to Post Office Boxes. The cost of shipping will be charged to the account number you provide. If you do not provide a carrier account you will be charged a $20.00 (U.S.) shipping fee and the USGS will select a carrier for shipping the product(s).
Additional charges for insurance, customs fees and shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer. Payment for orders shipped outside the United States may be made with an international money order drawn on U.S. funds, or by using any of the following credit cards: American Express, Discover, Master Card or Visa. ASTER Pricing Policy Caveats
Pricing Transition
The new pricing policy began at 11:00 GMT (06:00 CDT) August 12, 2002. All orders submitted prior to August 12 will be processed first-in, first-out. Although these orders will be produced at no cost, please note that delays in filling such orders are likely due to heavy system loads. Customers purchasing data after August 12 will receive priority over orders placed at no cost.
ASTER Data Available at No Cost
- ASTER data will be provided at no cost to current NASA-funded researchers and affiliated users. Investigators who receive funds directly from NASA through a Grant, Contract, or Cooperative Agreement will be eligible to receive the data without charge. Affiliated users including researchers who receive NASA research funds through a third party, researchers from interagency and international partners affiliated with NASA through joint projects, and education users (including NASA-sponsored and non-NASA-sponsored) should submit a request to be granted access to data without distribution charge to oescomm@mail.hq.nasa.gov using the form at http://LPDAAC.usgs.gov/aster/application.asp.
NASA's Office of Earth Science will maintain the list of researchers authorized to receive ASTER data without charge and will provide those names to the Land Processes DAAC at the USGS EROS Data Center. Questions regarding access to data without charge should be addressed to Woody Turner at NASA Headquarters (woody.turner@hq.nasa.gov).
- Note that the LP DAAC has implemented the Data Pool, a direct access mechanism allowing all users to download ASTER L1B data via FTP without charge. The spatial coverage consists of only selected scenes within the United States and Territories. Although these data will be offered at no cost to the general public, distribution is limited to FTP only; media products cannot be generated. Refunds cannot be provided for purchased data now available in the Data Pool.
- Although a charge will be in affect for ASTER L1A and L1B products, all ASTER on-demand products, including digital elevation models, will remain without charge. For more information please visit the ASTER On-Demand web site at http://LPDAAC.usgs.gov/asterondemand/
LP DAAC Product Return Policy
Customers are entitled to exchanges or refunds for faulty products for a period of 60 days from the date of shipment. Returned products must be accompanied by a copy of the shipping summary and a letter describing in detail the reason for the return. Refunds cannot be provided for purchased products that are available at no charge in the Data Pool - please check the Data Pool before ordering if your area of interest is within the United States and Territories.
