Basic Information On The Availability Of Official Motion Pictures Of Naval Subjects filmed by U.S. Navy

Motion picture materials are divided into two types. One is "Stock footage", which is unedited film, essentially as it comes from the camera. The other is the "production", which is the highly edited product normally seen on television and in theaters.

All of the Navy's motion picture stock footage for the World War II period and up to 1967 is currently held by the National Archives at:

Motion Picture Branch
National Archives and Records Administration
8601 Adelphi Road
College Park, Maryland
(301) 837-0526

Very little motion picture footage has survived for many notable incidents and naval subjects. If you are researching recent official Navy motion picture productions, you should contact:

Chief of Navy Information
Department of the Navy
Washington, DC 20350-1200

When inquiring about productions, provide as much information as possible about the title, subject, date, and if possible, the stock number of the items in question.
