Connecting to Seaborg

Remote access to seaborg is available only via software which uses the the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol. See Connecting to NERSC and Secure Shell (SSH).

Outbound ftp is available from Seaborg. The default ftp command is a hard link to the pftp program. The native IBM version is available in /usr/bin/ftp.

By default, all incoming network ports, except that for SSH, are blocked on Seaborg. Outgoing ports are open. Note that attempts to tunnel incoming ftp connections from a remote site will fail since ftp attempts to open a second port to transfer data. Special requests for opening ports on Seaborg can be submitted via a web form.

Passwords

Before logging into the SP for the first time, and periodically after your account becomes active, you must change your password on a special login node named sadmin.nersc.gov:
  1. Connect to sadmin.nersc.gov
  2. Issue the passwd command
  3. Select a new password that adheres to the NERSC Password Policies.
  4. Log out of sadmin
  5. It may take up to one hour before all interactive nodes receive the changed password. You may work work on sadmin.nersc.gov immediately.
  6. After waiting one hour connect to seaborg.nersc.gov using your new password.

Note that the passwd command requires that you wait at least one week before making another password change.
