FEMA Region VI states include Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The Federal Regional Center (FRC) is located on a 20-acre tract of land donated to the Federal Government by the local citizens in Denton, Texas. This was the first protected underground federal regional emergency operating center built in the nation.
The Region employs 100 full-time employees, and can draw on a cadre of over 300 Disaster Assistance Employees (DAEs) or "reservists" during Presidential Disaster Declarations. The Denton Mobile Emergency Response Support (MERS) detachment is also located at this facility. The Region, working with state and local governments, provides mitigation, response, and recovery from natural disasters such as flooding, hurricanes and tornadoes and manmade calamities as extreme as a nuclear attack.
